Duplicate results

A sample of the 300+ bibliographic records added to the NHU-PAC on Wednesday, June 27, finds them showing up twice in search results. NHAIS Services has also found evidence of this happening with some records added earlier this year. Please ignore the duplication while we look into what's causing this.

Van Delivery, July 2007

The State Library will be closed on Wednesday, July 4, 2007. There will be no van delivery on that date. If you are a once a week stop, you may want to make arrangements with a nearby library to have your materials delivered/picked up for that week.

For a complete list of all of the holidays the State Library is closed, please visit http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/van_delivery/instructions.html (the van delivery instructions) and scroll down to "NO Van Service".

Also, van driver vacations are coming up. During that time, a substitute driver(s) will be taking over. Van delivery will be made, although very likely at a later time than the regular driver(s) arrive. The vacation times I have scheduled substitute drivers for so far are as follows:

Friday, July 5th and 6th - Southwestern Route (Jim Weatherbee's route)
Week of July 16 - Southeastern Route (Stan Arthur's route)
Week of July 30 - Southwestern Route (Jim Weatherbee's route).

Sue's Clues for Annual Report FY2006

Susan M. Palmatier (Supervisor - Library Development Services, North Country Office, NHSL) has provided a few tips and tricks to help ease the pain of filling out the FY2006 NH Public Library Annual Report:

  • If the Back, Next, and Update buttons are partially or completely out of sight at the bottom of your screen, hit the F11 key. This year those buttons tend to be hidden by the status bar, which is the one that tells you when a web site is ready to view -- at that point the bar says Done. Alternatively, to view the Back, Next, and Update buttons in full, click on View at the top of your IE screen, then on Status Bar; clicking on it should make it disappear until you click on it again and it reappears.
  • When you try to submit your survey, you'll receive one or more edit checks, some of which will be eliminated from next year's version. One of these is for question 36d (Total Licensed Databases). Yes, the answer appears with two decimal places; ignore that. However, you will have to explain why this year's figure doesn't gibe with last year's. To do that, go to the right of the screen of edit checks and you'll see a very faint square; click on that square and a yellow, electronic "sticky note" will appear on the screen. Type in the following text: "Detailed breakdown was not requested in PY." (PY = Prior Year.) Then click OK on the yellow note. Also remember to click Update at the bottom of the screen.
  • Another edit check you may see is one that doesn't like your answer to question 15b (Total Scheduled Public Service Hours Open per Year). Using the same yellow, electronic sticky note, just say that the figure is accurate, or a true count, for the CY. (CY = Current Year.) Then click OK and Update.
  • Anytime you see an edit check you don't understand, or which seems to make no sense, please call or e-mail Sue at 1-800-462-1726, or spalmatier@library.state.nh.us. She'll walk you through it.
  • When you're clearing up your edit checks before you submit your survey, always make sure you click Update either after you've written each explanation OR after you've finished writing them all. Be sure that all nasty red edit check messages have changed to a lovely, spring green before attempting to submit your survey.
  • When all your edit check messages are green, click on Status and Printing at the top of the screen to get to the Submit Survey step. If your survey goes through successfully, you'll see a message saying, Congratulations!, and (if you have speakers), you'll hear a chime.

There may be more of Sue's Clues forthcoming. Watch this space.

Your ILL Statistics

As it is once again time to collect NH library statistics, I thought a review of how you can find information on your NHAIS ILL activity would be in order. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Log in to the NHAIS ILL system
  2. Click on the blue box next to Administrative Functions (under Miscellaneous)
  3. Click on the blue box next to Statistics Report (under Miscellaneous)
  4. Click on the blue box next to Display Loan/Borrow Summary Statistics
  5. Using the drop down boxes, select the start and end dates (inclusive) that you want statistics for -- start date: Jan 2006, end date: Dec 2006 for example
  6. If you want a copy of the statistics emailed to the ILL email address on file for your library (the one where you get unfilled notices) then click in the check-box next to "email report"
  7. Click on the blue box next to Display Statistics

After a moment (or two) your report will display. All the libraries in the NHAIS system are listed in the report with the number of items your library borrowed FROM each of them (the top section of the report), and the number of items your library loaned TO each of them (the bottom section of the report). Totals for each section are at the end of the section.

If you had the report mailed to you it will come from nobody@Centre.library.state.nh.us, so you may need to check your "junk" folder or other email filter location for the report if you don't see it right away.

FY2006 NH Public Library Annual Report

The following message is from Sue Palmatier, supervisor of the State Library's Library Development Services section:

Great news! You asked for it, and it's here: The FY2006 NH Public Library Annual Report questionnaire is up and ready for you to fill out. The deadline is Friday, the 13th of July. If this is a true hardship, please get in touch with me as soon as possible.
I think you'll be pleased to find that the survey is shorter this year, and there are only three new questions, all of them fairly simple. We now ask you to split your electronic database count among local, state, and other agreements or funding sources; we ask for the total number of registered borrowers at your library; and we ask whether or not you get e-rate money.
On the other hand, we've simplified and shortened the section on Internet access, and we now ask for the number of public Internet-access computers, rather than terminals.
Don't forget to check the separate Instructions if the questions are not self-explanatory or the brief notes accompanying the questions aren't clear. And call or e-mail either Sue Palmatier or Tom Ladd as you need to; both are at 1-800-462-1726. Sue's e-mail is spalmatier@library.state.nh.us; Tom's is tladd@library.state.nh.us. You'll need a PC (*not* a Mac) with Windows 95 or higher and Internet Explorer 6.0 or later. Netscape and other browsers will not work.
To get started on the survey, go to http://collect.informata.com/. On the log-in screen you'll see directions on dealing with the Internet Explorer pop-up blocker while logging in. However, if you have a Google, Firefox, or other program with a built-in pop-up blocker, you'll have to turn it off before trying to access the survey.
You'll need the same username and password as you've used in the past, if you've done the survey previously. If not, call or e-mail Sue or Tom.
Those of you who have done the survey online before will be thrilled to learn that Bibliostat now leaves the title bar at the top of the screen exposed (that's the bar with the minimize/maximize boxes and the big X you click on to close the window); this means you can now minimize the collection screen if you want to check your e-mail, look up a file, or do some other task.
The survey may not be fun, but it shouldn't be onerous, either. If you're having any trouble at all, don't stare at the screen in exasperation or panic; call us and we'll walk you through the questions.
Thanks for your patience and your cooperation. Your contribution to NH's statistics collection is extremely important not only to our state's libraries but to those throughout the country. Your peers are depending on you.

SirsiDynix changes

SirsiDynix is pleased to announce that the company has appointed a new chief executive officer and a new chief financial officer. We are excited to make this announcement, particularly given that our new CEO, Gary M. Rautenstrauch, is familiar to the library community. As CEO, Gary will be responsible for all SirsiDynix corporate functions — finance and administration, international, development, operations, sales, and marketing. His direct reports will be Doug Maughan (see below), Keith Sturges, Talin Bingham, Mike Casale, Terry Jarnagin, Bill Davison, Stephen Abram, and Tom Gates. Gary will begin his new position on Friday, June 22.

Gary brings to SirsiDynix nearly 30 years of operational experience across many functions and more than 25 years of experience serving the library community. From 1981-2003, Gary worked at Baker & Taylor, a leading wholesale distributor of books, video and music products, data, and services to libraries worldwide. Gary’s roles at Baker & Taylor give him broad knowledge of the library space as well as extensive operational knowledge of companies that serve libraries. Gary served in a range of capacities at Baker & Taylor, including president and CEO, as well as COO. Since Gary’s time at Baker & Taylor, he has served as CEO of Blackwell’s Book Services, a provider of supplies to academic libraries, and as president and CEO of Advanced Marketing Services, a provider of merchandising, distribution, and publishing services to the book industry. Gary holds an MBA from New York University and a bachelor’s from the University of Miami in Florida.

We are also announcing that Douglas R. Maughan will be joining us, beginning on June 25, as our chief financial officer. Doug’s responsibilities will include executive management of all SirsiDynix corporate finance and administration functions, including accounting, finance, legal, human resources, facilities, and IT. His direct reports will be Mark Thorpe, John Anderson, Missy Pickering, Ian Forrest, Jackie Lohdefinck, Kristin Rydman, and Ken Hovanes.

Doug brings nearly 30 years of financial and administrative experience to SirsiDynix, including roles as CFO and vice president of administration. Most recently, Doug served as vice president of administration and CFO for Scriptpro LLC, a manufacturer of pharmacy automation solutions. He also served as senior financial officer of W.L. Gore and Associates Inc., an international manufacturer of products that include GORE-TEX, and CFO and vice president of administration for MG Industries, a manufacturing company. Early in his career, Doug served as a senior audit manager and staff accountant for PriceWaterhouseCoopers and Deloitte & Touche. Doug is a CPA who holds his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Utah State University and the University of Utah, respectively.

A press release about the appointments will be issued this afternoon.

Gary will be in attendance at the ALA Annual Conference in Washington, D.C., which kicks off on Saturday, June 23. Be sure to visit SirsiDynix Booth #3747.

Expand Your Library's Reference Services With How-To Video

People learn in different ways. Some individuals are able to learn by listening or reading; but let's face it, there are some things everyone learns better by watching someone else do it. That's where online video comes in so handy! Did you know that there are a number of sites (similar to YouTube) that specifically showcase do-it-yourself-type video? Here are a few of the sites you might consider the next time you're asked how to create an Ethernet patch cable or how to make Pico de Gallo.

I haven't explored the sites long enough to necessarily pick a favorite. All of the above sites have a search feature and put the videos in subject categories for easy retrieval; however, I admit that I like how Expert Village goes the extra step to showcases video by "experts." (They also list the experts' credentials.)

Note: Like all user-generated content, you might need to determine what is good advice from "experts" and appropriate for your users. Some services are ad-supported and feature a short advertisement before the desired video.

Original Cataloging Project

At the recent NHAIS meeting, several people asked about the NHAIS Original Cataloging project and I realized that the info about this project had not been added to our web site. It is there now.

We began this program in 2005 and have cataloged 22 visual materials, 39 sound recordings, and 347 books since then. Cataloged titles are listed on the NHAIS tab of the NHU-PAC.

Enhance Book Groups With Online Author Interviews

Book group members often want to know more about the book's author and the inspiration behind the creation of the book. Why not incorporate an online author interview into your book discussion? There are currently about a dozen Simon & Schuster online videos available to watch at the Website, bookvideos.tv.

According to the blog, Mashable, publishing company Simon & Schuster will soon create a YouTube channel highlighting authors and books. Hopefully this is a trend we will see more of in the near future by other publishing companies!

Note: Other author interviews on video are scattered around the Web and can be found occasionally on publishers Websites, but they can be difficult to find. Having a YouTube channel(s) dedicated to author interviews would be a vast improvement for finding video!

Managing Your Photos

Let's say you've just returned home from vacation with hundreds of photos you want to share with friends and family. How do you easily upload, organize, and share all of these digital pictures?

The first of three sites I'll blog about is Photobucket. Photobucket has attracted a lot of interest because it was recently purchased by NewsCorp, the same folks who own MySpace and Fox, for a lot of money. Read more from TechCrunch. Photobucket differs from other photo sharing sites because it accepts both pictures and short video.

Photobucket allows you to upload both photos and short video and remix them together to create a unique and visually interesting show. I found the uploading process to be the slowest of the three photo sharing sites, and that fact seriously limited my desire to make this my primary photo sharing tool. Although the remixing is a great feature, I didn't really have the patience (or, frankly, the creative talent) to make anything very interesting. However, I'd recommend this site to anyone who has the time and creativity to produce a dynamic remix!

For the digitally-inclined student, this tool would help to produce an amazing, "how-I-spent-my-summer-vacation" presentation!

NHAIS-L & NHAIS-ILL are back

The NH Office of Information Technology (OIT) has moved the NHAIS-L and NHAIS-ILL lists (as well as other lists they host) onto a new server and has changed the administrative responsibility for these lists to staff at OIT. NHAIS Services staff will continue to serve as moderators of theses lists (approving messages and subscriptions), but we do not currently have access to the subscriber accounts or other list settings. You can manage your listserv subscriptions via the web (see below). If you have problems with the lists please contact us with details and we will try to get the information to the appropriate OIT staff. We have been told by OIT that all subscribers have been moved onto the new server.

All list addresses have CHANGED, so you will need to modify your address books and make appropriate adjustments to your spam filters.

NHAIS e-mail lists: still out of service

Tuesday, June 12, 9 a.m.: A fourth day has dawned on our land sans NHAIS-L, sans NHAIS-ILL, sans any of the other e-mail lists hosted by the state. We, the administrators of these lists, continue to await word from the state's Office of Information Technology that the lists are ready for business on their new server. As soon as we know that things are working properly, we'll send a message to subscribers and let you know the new addresses to send messages to NHAIS-L and NHAIS-ILL.

Important changes to NHAIS e-mail lists

Important information for subscribers to NHAIS-L and NHAIS-ILL:

Mary Russell and I, the administrators of NHAIS-L and NHAIS-ILL, have just received word from the state's Office of Information Technology that these and other e-mail lists hosted by the state will be moving to a new server this weekend. This has important implications for subscribers:

1) The current addresses to send messages to NHAIS-L and NHAIS-ILL will no longer be valid after today. If you have a message you're planning to send to either list PLEASE SEND IT BEFORE 3 P.M. TODAY (June 8, 2007)!!!

2) DO NOT SEND MESSAGES TO NHAIS-L OR NHAIS-ILL THIS WEEKEND!!! The addresses will no longer be valid after today. Messages sent after 3 p.m. Friday, June 8, may make it through to the soon-to-be-retired server so senders won't get an "undeliverable" notification but that doesn't mean we'll be able to approve the messages and post them to the lists.

3) Watch for a message with the new addresses for NHAIS-L and NHAIS-ILL on Monday, June 11. We'll try to send word to subscribers as soon as it's available and will have a message here on the NHAIS Notes blog as well.

Sorry about the very late notice about this important change; we didn't know until this morning when the server change was going to happen.

Lost Book List for May 2007

Among the enemy, J Fiction by Haddix returned to Manchester City Library from Plaistow on March 20th but not received.

We had a book coming to us in Barrington called Reading the Forested Landscape as a trade from Harrisville PL and it has not arrived to us yet. Has anyone gotten a book such as this delivered to your van stop by mistake? If so, could you please pass it along to Barrington PL.
Thanks.
Amy Inglis

I would appreciate it if you would take a look for 2 books which seem to have disappeared some where between libraries:
Skinny legs and all by Tom Robbins , belonging to Weeks PL in Greenland and
The tender bar by J.R. Moehringer, call no. B Moe, and it belongs to Stratham.

Thunder From the Sea by Joan Harlow, coming from Newton/Gale to Farmington/Goodwin.
The book was sent out about March 17th and never made it to Farmington.

Dance upon the air by Nora Roberts (F ROB PB) was sent to us but we have no record of its arrival and can not locate it here. Madbury Library

We are trying to track down the book Aspects of the Novel by Forster which should have been "traveling" from Cook Memorial Library in Tamworth to Hills Memorial Library in Hudson. Has it gone somewhere else by mistake. Thanks for checking.

We are looking for a DVD of Middlemarch that we leant to a library several months ago. They believe they returned it in February. Our records still show it as out and its not on our shelves either. Ring any bells for anyone? Thanks for checking! Janis Minshull
Chocorua Public Library (van stop: Tamworth)

WalpoleTown Library is looking for the following books that have gone astray on their way to other libraries:
Green Hills of Africa by Hemingway. Hard cover, 1935 edition.
Where the Forest Meets the Sea a children's picture book by Baker. Hardcover, 1987.
Please check your shelves. Thanks so much.

To submit items for June’s list, there are now two options:

#1- Email to librarian@madison.lib.nh.us. Be sure to put “lost book list” in the subject line and to include spine label call number so we all know where to look for lost item.

#2 - Post lost items on the lost book list wiki. This wiki allows immediate posting and viewing and can be updated by anyone with the password (read further). If you have something to add to this list, or want to remove something that’s been located, you can do that by signing in with password and clicking the “edit page” button, making changes, and then clicking the “save” button. Password for login can be obtained by emailing librarian@madison.lib.nh.us There is a link to the wiki on the right-hand panel of this blog.
