Among the technical services supplies available through NHAIS Services are 3M Tattle Tapes for use with library security systems. In the past tattle tapes could only be ordered in quantities of 5000 and only a few times per year.
Through our Lyrasis membership we are now able to offer tattle tapes in quantities of 1000 and you can place an order any time. Details on pricing and placing an order are on the NHAIS Services web page.

The current NH Center for the Book book-of-the-week, Library Mashups, may be of interest to NH librarians. It contains info relevant to NH libraries and written by a NH librarian.

To: New Hampshire Public and School Librarians
From: Michael York
Subject: Statewide Databases
Date: May 12, 2010
During the current economic difficulties facing New Hampshire, the State Library has had to cut its budget dramatically. We have done everything possible to minimize the impact on the library community and NH citizens. During the last year, the State Library has experienced direct staff layoffs and the inability to replace retiring state library personnel. In addition to these very difficult personnel cuts, we have had to cut other areas including supplies, acquisitions, travel budgets, etc.
The renewal of our database subscriptions is coming up soon, and we have been negotiating for some time with our vendors on prices of database packages. It is clear that we will have to cut our database offerings in order to stay within our available funds. At this point, we can only commit federal funds for database subscriptions.
Our current goal is to provide a foundation of databases that would be most usable to all NH citizens. Unfortunately, the available funds do not allow us to provide direct access to the schools, and we are also forced to drop many age-appropriate databases. The databases that are in jeopardy include Novelist, Novelist K-8, Business Source Premier, Middle Search Plus, Primary Search, Professional Development Collection, Salud en Espanol and MAS Ultra School Edition. We are investigating other ways to provide assistance to schools.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me.

It has fallen upon my shoulders to preside over the pamphlets and mouse pads at the State Library table on the first day of the NHLA Spring Conference (May 13). This presents an opportunity for you to ask those nagging NHAIS- and NHU-PAC-related questions that you've never quite found the time to call or write about. Or just stop by to say "hi."
While I'm at the conference Thursday, you can still contact the NHAIS Help Desk through the regular channels (271-2141 or nhu-pac@dcr.nh.gov). I understand that Bobbi Slossar will be at the State Library table for a few hours on Friday. She can handle your questions about downloadable audiobooks and eBooks and online databases and assorted technological matters. If you're looking to download MARC records for those audiobooks and eBooks from the NHU-PAC, though, that's right up my alley.
There's one question I expect might come up because we haven't said anything about it in a long time: whatever happened to plans for the next generation of the NHU-PAC? To spare you having to ask at the conference (but don't be afraid to bring up the topic if you'd like to know more) I've posted a separate message on this topic.

Back in 2007, there were committee meetings and surveys and a "Shaping the Next NHU-PAC" session at the NHLA/NHEMA spring conference, with plans to view vendor demonstrations later that year and select a new system early in 2008. And here we are in 2010 with the same old system. What happened? Our SirsiDynix contract for the current system didn't expire as soon as we had been led to believe. Then came a budget crunch that led us to extend the contract even further in the absence of funds to buy something new. We'll be revisiting this issue before the expiration of our current contract but right now there is no activity toward moving to a new system. However, the work done in 2007 gave us lots of ideas about how the NHU-PAC could work better (survey results are available online) and we continue to talk to SirsiDynix about possible improvements. One more point that has caused some confusion: the statewide open-source automation project is entirely separate from plans for a new NHU-PAC.

The NH State Library will be closed on Monday, May 31, 2010, in observance of Memorial Day. There will be NO VAN DELIVERY on this date.
For a complete list of all of the holidays the State Library is closed, please visit http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/van_delivery/instructions.html (the van delivery instructions) and scroll down to "NO Van Service".
If for any other reason (e.g. bad weather) van service on a particular route(s) does not operate, libraries will be notified via an e-mail message and this blog. If your library does not receive van service on a particular day, please check your e-mail and this blog before calling the State Library.
Please remember to properly label each item which you are sending via the Van Delivery Service. This will help ensure these items make it to the correct destination in a timely manner.
If you need a refresher on how items should be marked for the van, please refer to the Van Delivery Service - Instructions, http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/van_delivery/instructions.html, and scroll down to number 3 of the guidelines, "Addressing material to be sent on the van".
To print a current van directory list arranged in alphabetical order by library, please use the PDF version which is available at http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/van_delivery/documents/vandirectory.pdf
You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print this pdf file. If you do not have it installed on your machine, you may down load it for free from http://www.adobe.co.uk/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Due to the ever increasing load of materials transported by the New Hampshire State Library van delivery system, our vans can reach maximum capacity before the end of a van route, especially following long weekends and holidays. Our drivers can decline to accept materials if they feel they cannot fit them safely on their van. We are also asking libraries to please be aware of volume during times when there is likely to be a problem. You should prioritize your materials to be picked up, in case some items must be left until the next van pick up. That will allow us to immediately transport the most important items as quickly as possible.
If you have any questions you may contact Donna Gilbreth at 271-2060 or Diana DeCota at 271-2206.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

As of May 1, 2010 there were 1,964,093 bibliographic records in the NHU-PAC to which 6,131,275 items were attached. This is an increase of 4,740 bibs and 17,174 items in the past month. That averages out to 150+ bibs and 570+ items every day -- which is why "you never step into the same database twice."
