24,506 bib records to go

As of 7:14am today (June 30, 2010) there were 1,975,494 bibliographic records in the NHU-PAC to which 6,177,453 items were attached. This is an increase of about 11K bibs and 46K items since May 1. The 2-million bib record mark is only 24,506 records away. At our current level of record loading (an average of 186 per day) we should add the 2 millionth bib record to NHU-PAC around Halloween.

Online Resources for Finding Children’s Book Reviews

Ann Hoey, Youth Services Coordinator, NHSL contributed this article.

If you are selecting children’s and teen titles for your library collections, you probably rely on reviews from some of the professional review journals to help guide your choices. How can you read as many reviews as possible without subscribing to the many print publications available? The answer: NHU-PAC and the EBSCO databases. These two online resources can save a library more than $1,000 in print subscription fees—the annual cost of subscribing to Booklist, Horn Book, Kirkus Reviews, Library Media Connection, Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal. And this is just for journals that feature children’s and teen reviews!

NHU-PAC, the statewide online catalog, includes links to reviews in professional publications. If you know a children’s or teen title, try looking it up in NHU-PAC. If School Library Journal and/or Publishers Weekly have reviewed the title, you will find the complete review linked to the catalog entry.

The EBSCO databases available to NH libraries through NHewLink expand the number of review journals at your fingertips. In addition to Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal, MasterFile Premier includes the following journals that feature children’s and teen book reviews: Booklist, Horn Book, Kirkus and Library Media Connection. Librarians can use these databases to search for a particular title and find reviews from multiple journals. Alternatively, librarians can access the complete issues of these various review publications and read them online. It may be less desirable to read journals online than it is to relax with a paper copy, but you can’t beat the price of online access.

If you have any questions about accessing these reviews, please contact Ann Hoey at the NH State Library at Ann.Hoey@dcr.nh.gov

NHU-PAC is all set

The work on the NHU-PAC server that you were warned about earlier this week has been completed. Everything seems to be working as it should. If you find this not to be the case please contact the NHAIS Help Desk by email or at 603-271-2141.

NHU-PAC searching outage 6/17 noon

There's one more step before we're done with this week's server maintenance: another restart will happen sometime between noon and 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 17. During the server restart, NHU-PAC searches will yield "unable to retrieve results" messages. There also may be a brief period during which you can't connect to the NHU-PAC at all. A message will be posted here when the work is done.

Brief searching outage 6/16

Wednesday, June 16: NHU-PAC searching will be disabled for a few minutes starting at 7:35 a.m. to allow installation of an updated index. Searching service should be restored in about 5 minutes.

NHU-PAC server maintenance 6/16

On Wednesday, June 16, around 9 a.m., we'll be replacing a fan in NHU-PAC's main database server. We have no indication from Sun Microsystems as to whether this will cause any disruption of service for NHU-PAC users.

Thank you for bearing with us during server maintenance this week. So far we've managed to confine the service interruptions to less than an hour late Tuesday morning. Please understand that because several parties are involved in this maintenance we have to do the work during regular business hours.

Van Delivery News - June 2010

The NH State Library will be CLOSED on Monday, July 5, in celebration of the 4th of July holiday. There will be NO VAN DELIVERY on that day.

**********
For a complete list of all of the holidays the State Library is closed, please visit http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/van_delivery/instructions.html (the van delivery instructions) and scroll down to "NO Van Service".

If for any other reason (e.g. bad weather / vehicle breakdown) van service on a particular route(s) does not operate, libraries will be notified via an e-mail message and this blog. If your library does not receive van service on a particular day, please check your e-mail and/or this blog before calling the State Library.

**********

Due to the ever increasing load of materials transported by the New Hampshire State Library van delivery system, our vans can reach maximum capacity before the end of a van route, especially following long weekends and holidays. Our drivers can decline to accept materials if they feel they cannot fit them safely on their van. We are also asking libraries to please be aware of volume during times when there is likely to be a problem. You should prioritize your materials to be picked up, in case some items must be left until the next van pick up. That will allow us to immediately transport the most important items as quickly as possible.

If you have any questions you may contact Donna Gilbreth at 271-2060 or Diana DeCota at 271-2206.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Diana

Back in business

David has reported that all should be working normally. If you should notice anything out of the ordinary, please let us know (NHAIS Help Desk 271-2141).

NHU-PAC Searching currently down

You can probably see the NHU-PAC pages, and you can put in a search, but you won't get any results. We are working with Sirsi-Dynix to get everything restarted and back on track. As soon as things are sorted out we will update everyone.

Probable searching outage 6/15 10 a.m.

Monday, June 14, 3 p.m.: No server restart was required in today's diagnostic tests but plan on the NHU-PAC being unsearchable tomorrow (Tuesday the 15th) between 10 and 10:30 a.m. We could have done the restart this afternoon but, in case it brings up other problems, doing it in the morning minimizes the chances of having the system down overnight.

Possible searching outage 6/14 update 2

Monday, June 14, 1:00 p.m.: If it's necessary to restart the NHU-PAC's main server today, that will probably happen between 1:45 and 2:15 p.m.

Possible searching outage 6/14 update

Monday, June 14, 10:35 a.m.: The possible server restart (and consequent searching outage) mentioned in an earlier post probably won't be until sometime around noon today. If possible, a more precise time frame will be posted here.

Possible searching outage 6/14

Monday, June 14: Heads up: we need to run a diagnostic test on NHU-PAC's main database server later this morning and the process may require restarting the server. If that happens, you'd still be able to connect to the NHU-PAC but searches would yield an "unable to retrieve results" message.

Brief searching outage 6/14

Monday, June 14: NHU-PAC searching will be disabled for a few minutes starting at 7:38 a.m. to allow installation of an updated index. Searching service should be restored in about 5 minutes.

Literary Award Links Under Construction

The NHU-PAC links to various literary awards (found on the "Librarian's Tools" tab) are under construction this afternoon and may not work/display as expected (or at all). They will be back up -- in an expanded format -- by the end of the day today.

The Getty Provides FREE Access to the BHA

From a recent Getty announcement:
As of April 1, 2010, the Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) is available free of charge on the Getty Web site at http://library.getty.edu/bha. Free Web access to BHA is an advantage not only to all traditional users of the database but also to such potential users as institutions in developing countries and independent scholars worldwide, who until now have been unable to afford access to the BHA. Since ending its collaboration with the Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique (INIST)–CNRS in December 2007, the Getty has been searching for partners to continue the production and distribution of BHA. This process has been complicated, and with no suitable arrangement immediately available, the Getty decided to act on its commitment to the scholarly community by providing access to BHA directly from its own Web site. BHA on the Getty Web site offers both basic and advanced search modules, and can be searched easily by subject, artist, author, article or journal title, and other elements.

To search BHA, please visit, http://library.getty.edu/bha. Note that the database search includes both BHA (covering 1990-2007) and the International Bibliography of Art (IBA), covering the years 2008 and part of 2009. The RĂ©pertoire de la litterature de l'art (RILA), one of the predecessors of BHA, with records that cover 1975–1989, should be online by May 1.

Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) is the world's most comprehensive bibliography of scholarly writing about the history of western art. BHA includes articles from over 1,200 journals. Journals Included in BHA (PDF, 308 K)
The link above leads to a list of names and ISSNs of each of those journals. Note: BHA includes all articles within the subject scope of BHA regardless of the subject focus of a particular journal. Thus, many of the journals on this list are covered partially, as only some of their articles are within BHA's scope.
