Van Use Survey is Coming Up

Donna Gilbreth, Reference and Information Services Supervisor, New Hampshire State Library sent this message to NH libraries on Friday.

Dear Librarians,
We will soon be sending out a survey form to all libraries that use the NH State Library van delivery service. The survey will take place during the week of October 22nd through October 26th. We are requesting that you count all items you place in your van delivery bins (and bags) for delivery to other libraries during that week. Libraries that drop off materials at a neighboring library for pick up are also requested to complete the survey. The survey forms will be delivered in the next few weeks.

It is very important for all libraries using our van service to participate in the survey. We need this information for our management of the van delivery system. We also report statistics to the federal government since the service is mostly funded with LSTA funds.
Thank you for your participation in this important survey.

Important NHU-PAC Holdings Maintenance change

Attention, catalogers: the maximum number of records that can be used when adding or removing holdings in a batch in NHU-PAC Holdings Maintenance has been changed from 30 to 20.  This only affects use of the Click Here buttons pictured here (as they used to look):

There is no change if you use the Add Holding or Delete Holding buttons in Holdings Maintenance to change holdings on individual records.

NHAIS Services is investigating reports from users that holdings have not been added or deleted for all records in a list in spite of receiving a "Thank you" message.  We're still testing to find the exact cause but one possible problem involves the average length of bibliographic records these days being larger than when this system was implemented a decade ago.  For that reason, we've changed the number of records you can have in a list for use with the batch add/delete functions to between 2 and 20 (inclusive).

If you're using the batch functions with the new size limits and still find that your NHU-PAC holdings haven't been added or deleted as expected, please send details to NHAIS Services.  A copy of the "Holdings have been added for the following Records: 2702592, 2707539..." information would be particularly useful.  Also let us know if you have any questions about this change.

Maintenance on Holdings Maintenance done

Thursday, Sept. 13, 10:30 a.m.: Holdings Maintenance is back online.

Maintenance on Holdings Maintenance

I will be working on the holdings maintenance part of the NHU-PAC this morning and it will be unavailable while I am working on it. If all goes as expected the downtime will be 15-20 minutes. A message will go up here when the work is done.
I apologize for any inconvenience this causes.

MARC21 Bibliographic records - 010 tag

The LCCN or Library of Congress Control Number, (previously called the LC card number) is found in the 010 tag of MARC21 bibliographic records, is a unique number assigned by the Library of Congress to each catalog record. The number identifies the bibliographic record, not the item itself.

For records created prior to January 2001, the LCCN contained 8 digits, two initial digits representing the year, a hyphen, and the remaining 6 digits representing the record number. Beginning January 2001, the LCCN was created with four initial digits representing the year, a hyphen and the remaining 6 digits representing the record number for a total of 10 digits. Each LCCN should be unique to a record, but errors do occur and all though infrequently, one number can be assigned to more than one item.
The 010 tag has no indicators. The LCCN is found in an "implied subfield" ‡a. On occasion, you may find the LCCN preceded with a ‡z. This indicates that the LCCN listed in that subfield is not valid. On older records the LCCN may be found with prefixes such as agr, e or sa (indicating a specific series of records found at the LC); also prefixes such as cn, ce or cf indicate they are Canadian numbers.

When using the LCCN to search for records in NHU-PAC if the hyphen is present (example 74-00513), it is your choice whether to enter the leading 0's (74-513). If you do not enter them, NHU-PAC supplies them. But if you do not enter the hyphen, you must enter the leading 0's (74000513).

When an LCCN is printed in a book it is typically found on the title page verso. Searching by LCCN is an easy way to find records in NHU-PAC, but keep in mind that not all records have an LCCN. If you don't find a match when searching by LCCN you should try another search (ISBN, title and/or author) before assuming no record is available in NHU-PAC.
