Brief NHU-PAC outage tomorrow morning
As noted on our known issues page, NHU-PAC servers are routinely restarted on the last Tuesday of the month. NHAIS Services will be restarting NHU-PAC servers tomorrow morning starting around 7:35 a.m. The NHU-PAC should be back online within 10 minutes except that Holdings Maintenance sometimes takes an extra 5 minutes to be restored. There will also be a brief interruption of the ILL program around 10 a.m. when the ILL server is reset by our SirsiDynix support team in Utah.

Van Delivery Bins
Often times, a van driver will need to drop off an "overflow" bin at a library while delivering materials on the van delivery route. If you receive an "overflow" bin on your delivery day, please make sure that you return it the next time the van stops at your library. These bins belong to the State Library and often are in short supply due to the volume of materials being transported. Your cooperation in the speedy return of these bins would be appreciated by all of the van drivers.

January 2013 Holiday - Civil Rights Day
The New Hampshire State Library will be closed on Monday, January 21, 2013 for Martin Luther King Jr./Civil Rights Day.
There will be NO VAN DELIVERY on that date.
For a complete list of all of the holidays the State Library is closed, please visithttp://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/van_delivery/instructions.html (the van delivery instructions) and scroll down to "NO Van Service".
If for any other reason (e.g. bad weather) van service on a particular route(s) does not operate, libraries will be notified via an e-mail message and this blog. If your library does not receive van service on a particular day, please check your e-mail and this blog before calling the State Library.
Please remember to properly label each item which you are sending via the Van Delivery Service. This will help ensure these items make it to the correct destination in a timely manner.
If you need a refresher on how items should be marked for the van, please refer to the Van Delivery Service - Instructions,http://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/van_delivery/instructions.html, and scroll down to number 3 of the guidelines, "Addressing material to be sent on the van".
To print a current van directory list arranged in alphabetical order by library, please use the PDF version which is available athttp://www.nh.gov/nhsl/services/librarians/van_delivery/documents/vandirectory.pdf
You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print this pdf file. If you do not have it installed on your machine, you may down load it for free fromhttp://www.adobe.co.uk/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
Due to the ever increasing load of materials transported by the New Hampshire State Library van delivery system, our vans can reach maximum capacity before the end of a van route, especially following long weekends and holidays. Our drivers can decline to accept materials if they feel they cannot fit them safely on their van. We are also asking libraries to please be aware of volume during times when there is likely to be a problem. You should prioritize your materials to be picked up, in case some items must be left until the next van pick up. That will allow us to immediately transport the most important items as quickly as possible.
If you have any questions you may contact Donna Gilbreth at 271-2060 or Diana DeCota at 271-2206.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Temporary Job Opening in NHAIS
Michelle Reed, whom many of you know as the person who responds to many of the emails sent to nhu-pac@dcr.nh.gov, will be going out on medical leave beginning next week.
We will be hiring a temporary replacement to cover her work while she is out. The position is on the NH Library JobLine today.

MARC records for ebooks
There has recently been some discussion on nhais-l about MARC records for ebooks. I thought a quick overview of what NHAIS has been doing regarding these might be of interest.
- Titles that have been purchased by the NH Downloadable Books Consortium and for which an OCLC record exists, are added each week to the NHU-PAC based on the purchase list. These records have notes on them (in the 599 tag) indicating they are part of the NH Downloadable collection and have 856 tags added to them as well to provide NH patrons direct links to the material. If your library is part of the NH downloadables group you will want to keep these 856 tags in the records in your catalog so your patrons can click directly from your catalog to the download page (assuming your local system supports live links).
- For ebooks acquired by NHAIS libraries other than the NH Downloadables ones, OCLC records are added to NHU-PAC for these titles in the same way records are added for print books, or DVDs, or anything else. If you do not find a NHU-PAC record for the material you have acquired you should submit a "brief record" through NHU-PAC's Holdings Maintenance tab. If a record is available on OCLC for your title it will be added to NHU-PAC the next business day.
- Materials for which there are not currently OCLC records available are not currently being cataloged by the NHAIS Original Cataloging project. This applies to both NH Downloadables titles and titles requested by individual libraries. Such a project would be considered if it were determined that a gap exists between what NHAIS libraries are requesting records for through Holdings Maintenance and what can be found on OCLC.
- Titles purchased by individual libraries through the Overdrive Advantage program are added to NHU-PAC and have a special note added to them to differentiate them from the titles available to all NH Downloadables patrons. These records currently come into NHU-PAC from libraries that are part of the NHAIS OCLC Direct Access Program.
"Past monographic cataloging practice required the creation of a new record each time a new publisher, aggregator, or distributor provided access to a particular online resource. Increasingly, the same monographs were becoming available digitally from multiple providers, resulting in many duplicative MARC records for online resources in shared bibliographic utilities and in local catalogs. Catalog users often had difficulty understanding the rationale or the subtle differences between multiple records when searching through a cluster of very similar records. Often the only difference in a long record was the presence of a different publisher/aggregator/digitizer/distributor in the Reproduction note (533 field).
In developing a provider-neutral e-monograph policy, the task group followed similar provider-neutral policies that had been successfully enacted by the Program for Cooperative Cataloging for online serials and online integrating resources. According to this policy, no distinction is made between the cataloging of online reproductions and online resources issued simultaneously in another format. These distinctions had become less and less useful and increasingly difficult to make. All online monographs —reproductions, simultaneously issued manifestations, or born digital resources—are to be cataloged according to the same guidelines." Pictures, reviews restored
Tuesday, Jan. 8: Cover images, reviews, and such are now displaying correctly when viewing individual records in the NHU-PAC.
Also fixed recently: the Directory of New Hampshire Libraries. The disk space issue which caused an error when too many search results were found has been resolved.

LR, CD van route changes
Hello librarians,
We have had a catastrophic van failure (and the non-delivery of a new van) that will cause temporary changes to some van routes. I hope this will not be for too long, but at this point I do not have a set timeframe. I apologize for the inconvenience this will cause.
The Friday Lakes Region van route is cancelled as of today. The following libraries will not be receiving van service on Fridays. Most of the libraries will receive van deliveries on other days. I will work with the Friday-only libraries to receive temporary service at a nearby library. Therefore, you can continue to send materials to all these libraries, but delays may occur.

The Capital District route is also affected by the lack of a van. We will work on providing delivery to most of those libraries via automobile. Some Concord libraries will not receive a delivery, but will be asked to come to the State Library.
