New Library Directory & Your Library

Hi Everyone,

Short Take-away:
·         Your library will not be listed in the new library directory if you do not add the information electronically.
·         The information you added previously can be updated to include more people!

The Whole Story:

The current NH library directory will be replaced in the near future with a different kind of directory. The new directory will depend completely on electronic self-reporting. Each month a copy of the data will be made available on an editable Google sheet for editing. If you have edits or would like to include additional information at this time, please use the editable Google Sheet.

If your library is not listed in the directory, please take a moment and complete a new entry with this Google Form. (Do NOT use the editable Google Sheet to add a new library.)

Release Notes: Please read!

·         I’ve received requests to add information for
o   Assistant Director
o   Reference Librarian
o   Changing the Youth Librarian to Children’s and Teen Librarians
§  All “Youth Librarian” data was renamed “Children’s Librarian”
§  Please make whatever necessary changes on the editable Google Sheet.
·         Please add http:// to the library website when adding a new library.
·         Please enter the phone and fax number as 603-123-4567 x 999
·         Only select “No ILL Delivery” if you do not receive any ILL materials – even at another location.
·         The ZIP code loses its preceding zero on the spreadsheet, but don’t worry, I can restore it.
·         Please only add one person to each field. The directory cannot handle two email addresses in one field.
·         If you must add additional information, let’s try a “Notes” field. I cannot promise that I can make it work, but I will try.

Here is the Beta version of the new directory:

There are not enough libraries listed here yet to replace the current (outdated) library directory. Please check your library’s status and add a new entry, if necessary.

Thank you for your help with this!
Bobbi

Online Resources for Finding Children’s Book Reviews

Ann Hoey, Youth Services Coordinator, NHSL contributed this article.

If you are selecting children’s and teen titles for your library collections, you probably rely on reviews from some of the professional review journals to help guide your choices. How can you read as many reviews as possible without subscribing to the many print publications available? The answer: NHU-PAC and the EBSCO databases. These two online resources can save a library more than $1,000 in print subscription fees—the annual cost of subscribing to Booklist, Horn Book, Kirkus Reviews, Library Media Connection, Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal. And this is just for journals that feature children’s and teen reviews!

NHU-PAC, the statewide online catalog, includes links to reviews in professional publications. If you know a children’s or teen title, try looking it up in NHU-PAC. If School Library Journal and/or Publishers Weekly have reviewed the title, you will find the complete review linked to the catalog entry.

The EBSCO databases available to NH libraries through NHewLink expand the number of review journals at your fingertips. In addition to Publishers Weekly and School Library Journal, MasterFile Premier includes the following journals that feature children’s and teen book reviews: Booklist, Horn Book, Kirkus and Library Media Connection. Librarians can use these databases to search for a particular title and find reviews from multiple journals. Alternatively, librarians can access the complete issues of these various review publications and read them online. It may be less desirable to read journals online than it is to relax with a paper copy, but you can’t beat the price of online access.

If you have any questions about accessing these reviews, please contact Ann Hoey at the NH State Library at Ann.Hoey@dcr.nh.gov

The Getty Provides FREE Access to the BHA

From a recent Getty announcement:
As of April 1, 2010, the Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) is available free of charge on the Getty Web site at http://library.getty.edu/bha. Free Web access to BHA is an advantage not only to all traditional users of the database but also to such potential users as institutions in developing countries and independent scholars worldwide, who until now have been unable to afford access to the BHA. Since ending its collaboration with the Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique (INIST)–CNRS in December 2007, the Getty has been searching for partners to continue the production and distribution of BHA. This process has been complicated, and with no suitable arrangement immediately available, the Getty decided to act on its commitment to the scholarly community by providing access to BHA directly from its own Web site. BHA on the Getty Web site offers both basic and advanced search modules, and can be searched easily by subject, artist, author, article or journal title, and other elements.

To search BHA, please visit, http://library.getty.edu/bha. Note that the database search includes both BHA (covering 1990-2007) and the International Bibliography of Art (IBA), covering the years 2008 and part of 2009. The RĂ©pertoire de la litterature de l'art (RILA), one of the predecessors of BHA, with records that cover 1975–1989, should be online by May 1.

Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) is the world's most comprehensive bibliography of scholarly writing about the history of western art. BHA includes articles from over 1,200 journals. Journals Included in BHA (PDF, 308 K)
The link above leads to a list of names and ISSNs of each of those journals. Note: BHA includes all articles within the subject scope of BHA regardless of the subject focus of a particular journal. Thus, many of the journals on this list are covered partially, as only some of their articles are within BHA's scope.

Statewide Databases

To: New Hampshire Public and School Librarians

From: Michael York

Subject: Statewide Databases

Date: May 12, 2010

During the current economic difficulties facing New Hampshire, the State Library has had to cut its budget dramatically. We have done everything possible to minimize the impact on the library community and NH citizens. During the last year, the State Library has experienced direct staff layoffs and the inability to replace retiring state library personnel. In addition to these very difficult personnel cuts, we have had to cut other areas including supplies, acquisitions, travel budgets, etc.

The renewal of our database subscriptions is coming up soon, and we have been negotiating for some time with our vendors on prices of database packages. It is clear that we will have to cut our database offerings in order to stay within our available funds. At this point, we can only commit federal funds for database subscriptions.

Our current goal is to provide a foundation of databases that would be most usable to all NH citizens. Unfortunately, the available funds do not allow us to provide direct access to the schools, and we are also forced to drop many age-appropriate databases. The databases that are in jeopardy include Novelist, Novelist K-8, Business Source Premier, Middle Search Plus, Primary Search, Professional Development Collection, Salud en Espanol and MAS Ultra School Edition. We are investigating other ways to provide assistance to schools.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact me.

Biography Resource Center

I'm sorry to say that due to recent budget cuts the Biography Resource Center database will not be renewed. The subscription will expire at the end of this week. Please remember to update your library's database links.
