ILL Training this Fall

We have scheduled several virtual ILL training sessions for NHAIS libraries in September and October, including multiple days/times for several of them.

These are the NHAIS ILL courses being offered this fall:

ILL Basics

This introductory session, presented by Auto-Graphics, is for new users of the NHAIS ILL System or those who want a basic refresher on discovery, logging in, placing requests on behalf of a patron plus an overview of Staff Dashboard and the Request Manager.

Offered: September 17, 1-3pm AND October 6, 10am-noon

Advanced ILL

This session, presented by Auto-Graphics,  will delve into managing NHAIS ILL requests as a borrower and lender, request search options, and the lender list build process.

 Offered: September 18, 1-3pm AND October 7, 10am-noon  

Patron Initiated ILL Requesting

NHAIS ILL System libraries can allow their patrons to place their own requests in the system which are then mediated by the patron's library before going to potential lenders. In this session, presented by Auto-Graphics, we’ll look at the patron experience, including logging in, placing requests, and account options.

 Offered: September 19, 1-3pm AND October 8, 10am-noon   

ILL Reports and Statistics

This session, presented by Auto-Graphics, will review the reports and statistics available to users of the NHAIS ILL System. .

 Offered: October 9, 10am-noon

Webinar: The 1950 Census

As more and more Federal U.S. government information is made available online every library, in fact every citizen with an internet connection, gains access to more Federal documents. To help NH libraries keep up with these resources we are going to include occasional posts here on Federal Depository Library news and information.

• Speaker: Claire Kluskens, Genealogy/Census Records Subject Matter Expert, National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
• Learning outcomes: Federal decennial population census records provide a snapshot of families and individuals at 10-year intervals. The most recent publicly available census, 1950, was released for public use on April 1, 2022. This presentation provides an overview of what is and is not included in the 1950 census, what you can expect from NARA’s 1950 census website, and resources that can help librarians answer patron questions about the census.

ILL Statistics and Reports Webinar

Auto-Graphics, our vendor for the NHAIS ILL System, is offering a free training webinar on ILL Statistics and Reports. This will be a basic review of statistics, primarily the Activity and Request Reports and the Borrower and Lender Statistics. What are the differences, and which should you use? 

The session will be held on Wednesday, June 23, 2021 at 3pm ET and will run for 1 hour. If you want to attend you must register directly with Auto-Graphics at

Note that this training is not NHAIS-specific. It is open to SHAREit users around the country so the screens used in the training may look slightly different from the screens you are used to. Basic functionality and the differences between reports will apply to NHAIS ILL System users.

Children's and Teen Book Review at NHSL

This is just a reminder about the Children’s and Teen Book Review, which will be held this week at the State Library from September 11-14 (Monday through Thursday) from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day.  Picture books as well as juvenile and teen fiction and nonfiction will be on display. Librarians are welcome to visit anytime during their convenience to look over the books, read reviews, and select a few books for their library collections. The books will be sent via van after the Review ends.

The list of titles at the Review is available on NHU PAC (Librarian’s Tools tab, then Children’s Book Review link). Questions should be directed to Ann Hoey, Youth and Adult Services Coordinator, at 603-271-2865.

Van Use Survey is Coming Up

Donna Gilbreth, Reference and Information Services Supervisor, New Hampshire State Library sent this message to NH libraries on Friday.

Dear Librarians,
We will soon be sending out a survey form to all libraries that use the NH State Library van delivery service. The survey will take place during the week of October 22nd through October 26th. We are requesting that you count all items you place in your van delivery bins (and bags) for delivery to other libraries during that week. Libraries that drop off materials at a neighboring library for pick up are also requested to complete the survey. The survey forms will be delivered in the next few weeks.
It is very important for all libraries using our van service to participate in the survey. We need this information for our management of the van delivery system. We also report statistics to the federal government since the service is mostly funded with LSTA funds.

NELA Early Bird Registration Ends October 5

Fall is fast approaching, and with it the New England Library Association Annual Conference on October 14 – 16, 2012 in Sturbridge, Massachusetts.  It will be three days of excellent educational sessions, informative exhibitor displays and many networking opportunities that you won't want to miss. 

Featured meal speakers include Andre Dubus at Sunday dinner, Sara Pennypacker at the NERTCL luncheon on Monday, and Dennis Lehane at the Tuesday luncheon.  ALA President Maureen Sullivan will attend all three days and is participating in many programs.

World Fellowship Center Announces Oral History Workshop Weekend

The New Hampshire Humanities Council asked me to share this information with the NH library community.

(Albany, NH) - The World Fellowship Center has received a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council to present “Building Community with Stories: The Art of Gathering and Presenting Oral History.”  This oral history workshop will be held the weekend of September 14-16, at the World Fellowship Center, located at 368 Drake Hill Rd, Albany NH.

Are you interested in collecting the stories of your family, your community, your organization? Teachers, community historians, organizational leaders, family historians, writers, performers, and all those interested in enhancing their oral history skills are invited to attend.

Jo Radner will lead this lively, hands-on workshop that will guide participants through effective strategies of interviewing, designing oral history projects, and presenting community stories.  Jo will give special attention to the kinds of projects envisioned by participants and will present examples of possible outcomes of oral history projects, from theatrical performances to websites, walking tours to print publications, school projects to immigrant festivals.

Oral history projects can serve to unify relations between newcomers and long-term residents, build stronger communities, reinforce family bonds, improve students’ understanding of history, and forge collaborations amongst diverse community groups.

Jo Radner is an oral historian, folklorist, and storyteller. She has taught oral history workshops and performed community stories from Maine to Hawaii. She is past president of the American Folklore Society and the National Storytelling Network. Learn more about her work at www.joradner.com.   

On Saturday, September 15, at 7pm, there is a free event open to the public entitled, “The Stories We’ve Heard: Performances of Oral History”. Jo will perform stories based on family and community oral history and participants in the weekend-long workshop will join her on stage.

The fee for attending the entire workshop is at the reduced cost of $30 ($20 for the second registrant from the same organization or family), thanks to the generosity of the New Hampshire Humanities Council. Anyone from the public is welcome to attend with advance reservation.  Meals and overnight lodging are also available if desired, at the picturesque World Fellowship Center.  Nightly rates include three meals and begin at $51 per night per adult. Non-participants are welcome to come along and enjoy World Fellowship’s waterfront, hiking trails, grassy recreation areas, and proximity to North Conway and the White Mountains.

Friday is Deadline for Public Library Reports!

Janet Eklund reports that to date over 100 libraries have NOT submitted their Annual Public Library Statistics Report. About 75% of these started their surveys but never finished.
The deadline for completing these is Friday, April 6th!
I would like to urge you to make this an important task to accomplish this week.

Dewey Webinars on Feb. 7th

Another System Outage on Tuesday

Once again we are going to need to take the NHU-PAC offline so that we can move equipment around in preparation for the new server. We got everything moved last week into what we thought would be a workable arrangement only to discover when the server came out of its boxes and racking began that the rails for the new server were too long for the rack we planned to put it in. (Yes, I now know to check this ahead of time. By the time this server install is done I will have learned a lot of stuff that can go wrong and needs to be checked on.)

The last Tuesday of the month is our regularly scheduled day to restart the servers so we will do the work Tuesday morning. It will be later than the usual restart, however as numerous people, including some in Utah, need to be involved.

The NHU-PAC will be shut down on Tuesday, November 29, 2011 at around 9:30am and will be down for as long as it takes to get the various machines swapped out. I would expect an hour or two, but we won't know for sure until we get there.

Server replacement schedule delayed

The upgrading of our NHU-PAC server that I announced last week has been delayed.

I don't have new dates yet--a conference call this Thursday may provide them--but it won't happen next week. As soon as a new schedule is confirmed I will let everyone know what to expect. My best guess at this point is early December, but don't quote me.

2011 National Survey of Public Library Funding and Technology Access

Janet Eklund, Administrator of Library Operations, NHSL, recently sent out this reminder to NH libraries. Don't let NH get left out again!

In its seventh week, the 2011 National Survey of Public Library Funding and Technology Access continues to receive survey responses. Currently, New Hampshire has a 32% response rate! Thanks to all the librarians who took the time to complete the lengthy survey. Many librarians have started the survey but not yet completed it.

NHU-PAC will be down week of November 7th

We will be installing a new NHU-PAC server in the next couple of weeks--this is the main server where all the NHU-PAC data resides--which will require the system to be shut down almost entirely for 3 days the week of November 7th.

Every time I have been ready to write this post and let NHAIS libraries know what to expect there has been a change to the plan (NHSL, SirsiDynix, and NH Department of Information Technology staff are all involved, so there are a lot of moving parts to coordinate). What has to happen, and how long it will take is fairly solid, when it will happen has been a constantly moving target. Consequently, I would pencil the following into your calendars:

• NHU-PAC, for all searching and cataloging, will be unavailable from 4:30pm on Monday, November 7, 2011 until the end of the day (4:30pm) on Thursday, November 10, 2011.
• You will not be able to start new interlibrary loan transactions during this period of time, because searching will be unavailable in the ILL system as well as the rest of the NHU-PAC. According to SirsiDynix (but untested until we actually disconnect the old server) you will be able to access your existing ILL transactions in the system to fill, or return, or set to not available requests that are begun before 4:30 on Monday 11/7/2011. As NHU-PAC will be down your usual path to the ILL system won't be available, but there is a direct link to the NHAIS ILL system on the NHAIS Services ILL Resources web page.
• Updates on progress will be posted, as usual, on the NHAIS Blog. If everything goes smoothly and we are able to bring the system back up before the end of the day on Thursday we will announce the revised plan on the blog and get things back online sooner.
• Until we announce that everything is back DON'T go online and modify holdings or start ILL transactions. Once things are installed we will test them, and it is possible that you might see what looks like the NHU-PAC available for use but is actually a temporary test environment and any work you do there will be lost. We won't forget to let you know when everything is ready.

The Library of Congress is Coming to Concord

On August 30 & 31, 2011 The Library of Congress Gateway to Knowledge Travelling Exhibition will be at the New Hampshire State House (107 North Main Street, Concord, NH) and will be open for visitors from 10am-6pm each day.


The exhibition outlines the history of the Library of Congress, Thomas Jefferson's role in re-establishing the Library after the burning of the U.S. Capitol in 1814, and his classification system of Memory, Reason, and Imagination. These three categories define the organization of the content inside the exhibition.

The visit is being co-hosted by the New Hampshire State Library and Concord Public Library.

NHU-PAC server upgrade update

The purchase of a new main database server for NHU-PAC and the continuation of our support contract with SirsiDynix for NHU-PAC was on today's Governor & Council Agenda (it is item #9). The request was approved. We will be moving forward with the purchase and installation of a new production server as soon as possible. When a specific plan is in place we will let everyone know when things will be shut down for the transition.

There was news making the rounds of the state recently (I think I saw it in minutes from an NHLA meeting or perhaps a coop meeting) that we had gotten a new server. That was a different server than the one that was approved today. In March we replaced the server that the NHU-PAC Holdings Maintenance programs reside on with a newer server that had been used as our pac server in the past (that is the server that the webpages you see when you use the NHU-PAC actually reside on). The one we are now replacing is the main server that hosts the actual NHU-PAC database.

Preservation Week

April 24-30, 2011 is preservation week. Brought to libraries across the country by the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), in partnership with the Library of Congress and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, this national awareness campaign was developed to promote the understanding and importance of care for personal and community cultural heritage collections regardless of their format.
American Libraries Magazine recently published an article that gives a nice overview of the project.
The ALCTS Preservation Week Website has lots of useful info and resources including preservation facts,
a bibliography, and ideas for getting kids involved.
