Van McLeod
The Department of Cultural
Resources is deeply saddened to announce that our long-time commissioner, Van
McLeod, passed away this morning at 5 a.m. at Concord Hospital.
Van was first confirmed to the
position of commissioner in 1992. He brought to the job an extended background
in theatre, film, rock concert production, event planning and promotion.
Throughout his time in state
government, he was a tireless champion for culture in all of its forms: the
arts, film and television, historical preservation and libraries. He was as
well known for his humor and compassion as he was for his devotion to
supporting culture statewide.
Van won many awards and
accolades throughout his career, but perhaps the award he cherished most was
the recognition that he was a great guy, universally liked and respected.
Arrangements will be announced
in the near future.
