Enhancements to display of online content information
The NHAIS ILL System will be offline for about 15 minutes tonight (Tuesday, Dec. 5) starting at 10 o'clock to install a software update. This update won't change anything about the ILL process but will enhance the display of information about online content in search results.
Expect to see a lot more of the Online Content box when looking at a search results detail screen. It will now display for all formats if an 856 tag (Electronic Location and Access) is present in the record. Previously, the Online Content box only displayed for electronic formats such as an eBook or eSerial. Users had to look for the link(s) in the Details of the record to see if online content was available for non-electronic formats. Online content for non-electronic formats often includes links to supplemental information such as an author biography, table of contents, or an excerpt. Print formats may include a link to an electronic version of the item available online, such as at Project Gutenberg or the Internet Archive.
Display of the 856 subfields in the Online Content box is as follows:
-If there is a subfield $y (Link Text) the text will display as a link; the user will be able to hover over the text to see the complete text if it is truncated. Hovering over the link icon will display the full URL.
-If there is not a subfield $y but there is a subfield $3 (Materials Specified) the text will display as a link; the user will be able to hover over the text to see the complete text if it is truncated. Hovering over the link icon will display the full URL.
-If neither subfield $y nor $3 exist in the MARC 856, subfield $u (URL) will display a truncated URL as a link and the user will be able to hover over the truncated URL or link icon to see the full URL. (Previously, the phrase “Online Content” displayed as a link.)
-The Request This Item button will display above the Online Content box.
These examples display the old and new versions from the same record:
In this example, hovering the cursor over the link displays the full text:
Display of the 856 subfields in the Details is as follows:
-If there is a subfield $y (Link Text) the text will continue to display as a link with a link icon.
-If there is not a subfield $y but there is a subfield $3 (Materials Specified) the subfield $3 text will display as a link with a link icon.
-If neither subfield $y nor $3 exist in the MARC 856, the URL will display as a link with a link icon. Other subfields will continue to display the subfield text; for example, instructions on who can access the material in a subfield $z (Public Note).
-Long field names will no longer wrap to a second line.
