084 - Other Classification Numbers
Like the 024 "Other Standard Identifiers" tag, the 084 is a catchall for classification numbers that don't have their own designated tag. Numbers coming from classification schemes that have an LC Classification Scheme Source Code will be found in the subfield a of the 084 tag and the code of the scheme to which they belong will be in subfield 2. The item portion of the the classification goes in subfield b and subfield q contains the agency that assigned this classification number.
For example, the bib record for Encyclopaedias: Their History Through the Ages includes 7 different classification numbers:
- 050 0 0 ‡aAE1‡b.C6 1966
- 055 _ 4 ‡aAE1 C64 1966
- 060 0 0 ‡aAE 1‡bC713e 1965
- 082 0 4 ‡a030.9
- 084 _ _ ‡a01.22‡2bcl [Nederlandse Basisclassificatie = Dutch basic classification codes]
- 084 _ _ ‡a01.20‡2bcl [a variant Nederlandse Basisclassificatie]
- 084 _ _ ‡aAE 10100‡2rvk [Regensburger Verbundklassifikation = a German classification]
Certain classification choices are recognized by OCLC to be local decisions.
Multiple call numbers in the same classification scheme in the WorldCat
record (as in the example above) may be appropriate and are allowed in specific circumstances which are outlined in BF&S.
